CONSEQUENCES OF ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis is a disease that progresses with each menstruation. Without treatment, there are some consequences and complications of the disease.
Pain
Pain will progress with time. It can increase in severity, location and duration of pain. Many women with endometriosis will continue to upgrade their painkillers until they menopause. From bearable pain, to pain relief with simple menstrual pain killers, to strong oral painkillers, to injectable pain killers and finally to opiates. It is sad to see women with endometriosis that need morphine-like painkillers every month or every day of their life. Progression to cancer
About 3 to 5% of women with endometriosis will eventually progress to ovarian or uterus cancer. The difference between this type of cancer compared to the rest of the cancers is that it spreads before it turns into cancer. As mentioned before, endometriosis behaves like cancer because it spreads with each menstruation. Even though it has not turned cancerous, it spreads first. That is why it is very rare to see women with endometriosis with early stage cancer. By the time cancer is detected, it is usually at an advanced stage. Risk of cancer increases with the duration of the disease and with disease that recurs. A Complete Endometriosis Treatment is the way towards prevention of recurrence and thus prevention of cancer.
Difficulty to conceive
About 50% of women with unexplained fertility issues are due to endometriosis. As mentioned before, endometriosis is an invisible disease and as a result, these women would not know that they have endometriosis. With the routine ultrasound done for fertility, it would have shown that everything is normal and thus, unexplained subfertility. In our centre, a deep endometriosis scan is performed to all women with difficulty to conceive. With early detection, a simple surgery can be performed to remove all the endometriosis and in most instances, these women will conceive spontaneously.
